Lovenest: A Fusion of Vintage and Industrial Design

A Small Space Transformed into a Multi-functional Haven

In a space-restricted home to a newly wedded couple, a carefully planned interior space was what they needed. A fusion of vintage and industrial design worked wonders in this small space. Boundaries are opened to create multi-usage of every space. The space now allows more guests to interact with each other in the open area. A long breakfast counter serves a wonderful role from food preparation to family entertainment to hosting of gatherings in the house. A small wet area has been created in the existing kitchen to allow the couple enjoy the freedom of wet washing and cooking.

The Lovenest, a residential house designed by Andy Tan, is a unique blend of industrial and vintage aesthetics located in Singapore. The challenge was to create a fun and functional space in a confined area. The inspiration for this design came from the beauty of imperfect industrial materials with vintage finishes, as well as the socialization and layout of a tapas bar.

The layout of the house initially restricted the space, making it difficult to create ample storage and creativity. However, the design team decided to break the boundaries by combining the living hall with the dining room. This open area now allows more guests to interact with each other, creating a lively and social atmosphere.

The highlight of the design is the long breakfast counter, which serves a multipurpose function. It can be used for food preparation, family entertainment, and hosting gatherings. The kitchen has been separated into a wet and dry area, allowing the couple to enjoy heavy cooking in the enclosed space without worrying about the mess.

To achieve the desired aesthetic, the design team used vintage fancy concrete blocks and Turkish tiles as screens to provide privacy and add visual interest. The use of quartz for the breakfast counter ensures low maintenance for the modern family lifestyle, as it is resistant to stains and scratches.

The Lovenest is a fully-furnished house, designed to cater to the needs of a modern family. The project started in August 2014 and took about 2 months to complete. It was handed over to the homeowners in November 2014 in Singapore.

This unique design has garnered recognition and was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award is given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Lovenest stood out for its strong technical characteristics and its ability to create a remarkable level of excellence and wonder.

With its fusion of vintage and industrial design, the Lovenest stands as a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in transforming small spaces into functional and visually stunning homes.
